Supporting Puerto Rico's communities and producers is an important part of our sustainability strategy. Our culinary team prioritizes local sourcing, featuring more than 20 locally sourced products across our menus and showcasing seasonal fruits and vegetables throughout the year. By partnering with local farmers and suppliers, we help strengthen the local economy while offering guests an authentic taste of Puerto Rico.

sustainable HOSPITALITY
Sustainable responsibility is at the core of everything we do. We believe that luxury and sustainability can coexist harmoniously, and we are committed to leading the hospitality industry in environmental stewardship. From energy-efficient operations to waste reduction initiatives and eco-conscious guest experiences, we continuously seek ways to reduce our impact.
Protecting our Natural Resources
Protecting Puerto Rico's natural ecosystems is a responsibility we embrace across every aspect of our operations. Our conservation efforts include incorporating native and endemic plant species into landscaping projects, implementing measures to prevent the introduction of invasive species, and supporting initiatives that help preserve local flora, fauna, and surrounding ecosystems.
We also promote responsible water use through water-saving fixtures and flow-regulating equipment installed throughout guest rooms and public spaces, while our dedicated water well helps reduce reliance on potable water sources by supplying irrigation and cooling tower operations. Through these ongoing efforts, we are committed to helping preserve the Island of Enchantment's natural beauty for generations to come.
Our Sustainable Engagements
Reducing waste and promoting responsible consumption are key priorities at Fairmont El San Juan Hotel. We operate recycling programs for paper, cardboard, glass, and plastics throughout the property, maintain waste-sorting facilities for colleagues and guests, and recycle used cooking oils and grease. We also prioritize eco-friendly paper products sourced from recycled or sustainably managed forests and continuously evaluate opportunities to reduce single-use items through responsible purchasing practices.
We are committed to reducing energy consumption through continuous investment in more efficient building systems and technologies. Improvements include upgrades to our cooling infrastructure, climate-control equipment, and energy management systems, as well as the use of LED and other
energy-efficient lighting technologies throughout more than 80% of the property. Together, these initiatives help conserve resources, reduce emissions, and support a more sustainable operation.
Leading the Way in Sustainable Hospitality
At Fairmont El San Juan Hotel, we are deeply committed to sustainability, recognizing that the pristine beauty of our island is not just a backdrop, but a responsibility we share.

As our guest, you can make a meaningful difference during your stay. We encourage participation in our towel reuse and linen conservation programs, which help reduce water and energy consumption. Guests also benefit from environmentally responsible bath amenities made from natural ingredients, eco-certified linens and textiles, recycling initiatives, and water-saving fixtures installed throughout guest rooms and public spaces

Savor the flavors of the island through our commitment to responsible dining practices. Our menus prioritize seasonal ingredients, feature more than 20 locally sourced products, and offer a variety of vegetarian and plant-based selections representing at least 25% of menu offerings. We prioritize cage-free and free-range eggs, exclude endangered seafood species, and actively work to reduce the environmental impact of our culinary operations through food waste measurement, reduction programs, organic waste diversion efforts, and food recovery initiatives that support local communities.
